Off by default. Switched on, Otto photographs the screen every 5 seconds, reads the text LOCALLY and keeps it for 7 days — it never even reads password managers, banking or login pages in the first place.

Text, not an image — and never “now”
Two sentences stand above all five tools, verbatim from the source: what arrives is read-out TEXT, not an image — and the newest entry is almost never “now”, because reading happens on a beat.
The five tools
- Search screen history
- Keyword search over what was read — “the Amazon link with the dishwasher from yesterday”. At most 20 hits per query.
- Look back
- Asks by TIME instead of keyword — “what was I doing earlier?”. At most 20 sections, each with at most 4 window titles and 4 addresses.
- Forget
- Deletes the screen memory of the last hours or entirely — for good, with no trash.
- View status
- Says whether it is currently reading along, at what beat, how long things are kept and how much is stored.
- Otto looks at the screen
- On request, takes a PICTURE of every connected screen — the only one of the five that needs its own, one-time permission.
The beat and the retention
-
Off until you switch it on
No prompt during setup — the default is “off”.
-
A look every 5 seconds
That is how often it checks whether the screen has changed — unchanged content is not filed twice.
-
7-day retention
After that, an entry expires on its own. You can change the period in settings.
What it never even reads
Ten programs (1Password, Bitwarden, KeePass, LastPass, Dashlane, Enpass, keychain managers, Keychain Access, NordPass, Proton Pass) and sixteen word patterns in addresses (including “password”, “bank”, “paypal.com”, “2fa”) are hard-locked — the check happens BEFORE filing, not after, and you can add to this default but not remove from it.
Known gaps in this documentation build (as of 25 Sept 2026)
- “Forget screen history” and “view capture status” run in the integration test, but without their own automated pass.
- The actual screen look (bildschirm_ansehen) is only partly tested — a real screen capture via Electron does not run under the automated test suite.
