What Otto bases the triage on

Before you even look at your inbox, Otto has already sorted every new message. Nothing disappears in the process — it just no longer sits in one single, unsorted inbox.

The inbox, triaged re-enacted Re-enacted inbox with invented names: three emails arrive and get triaged — the law firm’s appointment confirmation as important, the furniture maker’s question as “can wait”, the newsletter as ads.

What feeds into the triage

  1. Address book and history

If the sender is known and there was a recent exchange, that counts toward “important” or “can wait” — not toward ads.

  2. The thread

Otto reads the whole thread, not just the last line — an ongoing matter stays recognisable as one.

  3. Detected ads

Newsletter and offer patterns move to the ads pile automatically, unless you say otherwise.

  4. Your own rules

You can add rules for a specific sender or a subject snippet — they take priority over the automatic triage.

A rule applies as soon as you create it and stays active until you switch it off — it does not expire on its own.
